I've just become acquainted with Dustin Stevens' works recently. His characters are so likable that as soon as I finished the Zoo Crew, I was ready to dig in to the next one in the series, Dead Peasants, which I knocked out in a couple of days.And as soon as I finish this review, I plan to start the next book.I particularly enjoy the setting, Missoula, which is far removed from any environment that I am used to (hot and hotter, with spring and fall so inconsequential as to easily miss if one blinks, and mild winters in which the rare snow shuts down all the schools and most of the businesses).It's easy to identify with Ajax's reaction to the biting cold that Mr. Stevens describes so well. I've always wondered how one can survive in the frigid north. I do love reading about it and will continue to enjoy it vicariously.I like the peripheral characters, such as Jinx, unique and memorable , who pop back up in subsequent books. You'll also discover that Mr. Stevens creates most interesting bad guys (like Notch in the first Zoo Crew novel) - but I'll say no more, so you can have the pleasure of discovering them for yourself.Finally, the main characters are young adults: law students, a nurse, a firefighter, a computer entrepreneur, a hockey coach - who have admirable character traits.In the America of today, the family structure, Christianity, ethical behavior, patriotism, respect for our elders, the work ethic, are slowly being eroded away. It is a pleasure to read about characters with integrity, bonds of friendship, a willingness to help others, to do the right thing, even in the face of danger.
I read the first book. It was a cheap read (which I regularly take advantage of) but didn't review it. Since Dead Peasants was a freebie I wanted to give it a chance.I didn't like it. It also solidified my feelings on the first book.I felt the writing was convoluted and I was re reading a lot to keep the characters and story together. Also, the editing was below par.I do have to give it one thing. After years in the insurance industry the dead peasants concept was something I had never heard of and got my attention.But that's all I can give it. I usually don't pass up a freebie but the offer of another is going by me. Two books in the series was enough. Sorry Dustin.
Having trudged through The Zoo Crew, I hoped Book 2 in the series would show improvement. Yikes, it's worse. Again, a decent enough storyline, but the writing - HELP! Having read that the author is a screenwriter, I can see where the choppy writing is coming from, but somebody needs to tell him that screenplays and fiction books require different styles of writing to "work". The poor grammar and word useage continue - I guess when what you write is going to be translated into a visual and oral story, those things don't matter. But when the written story is the only story, take the time and trouble to get it right, please! I had to force myself to finish this book. I'll try Book 3, but don't know if I'll finish it or not.
I love reading Dustin Stevens and recently stumbled upon the Zoo Crew series. I am pretty into the 2nd book Dead Peasants, like the plot- it's quite believable, and am enjoying the colorful character development. There are a few editing points but not enough to be annoying. I gave the book a 3 because of the abrupt ending. It literally just stopped. I know there are other books in the series but will anyone else?
As always this author wrote a thriller which I very much enjoyed. I love a series when I know the books most likely will take me to characters I am familiar with and enjoy. The only problem I have run into is when the book gets intense and I would rather read than sleep. Almost no sleep causes me to get up in the morning feeling like a zombie!
I have read several of Dustin Stevens books and do enjoy them but I can no longer stay silent about his poor grammar and downright sloppy editing! It is really annoying to see so many errors... every other page seems to contain some sort of mistake. Dustin Stevens, if you really do read these reviews you need to invest in a really proficient proofreader.
The book was informative, good plot but I didn't feel enough back ground on the main characters. I know there are other books with these "Zoo Crew" people and I look forward to reading more from them.Thank you!
I'm really enjoying the Zoo Crew stories! The first story was unique and fresh -- this followed that same pattern. Unique and fresh are what I enjoy most, however, adding in terrific writing and great characters puts it over the top! I've never heard the term, "Dead Peasants" and I certainly hope it is not being practiced now!
