Take your time and actually read this book cover to cover instead of just skimming through the content and reading sections that you're particularly interested in. I've found this author to be tremendously knowledgeable when it comes to building horsepower - I've been building engines for 30 years and still learned some things that were real eye openers to me - little tidbits that seem illogical initially, but make perfect sense after thinking it through for a while.As with his similar book about Chevy Big Blocks, he points out several areas where you can gain 5 or 8 or even 10 horsepower with little or NO cost except for a little elbow grease. Paying attention to all of these could add up to 40 or 50 extra horsepower for free (or close to it)!!

Great reference, great on engine theory! I used this and a Lingenfelter book as reference when building my first complete 383 engine build. I highly recommend the book as a reference. Use the theory to guide your choices with regard to component specs, but do your own research with regard to the brand of each product. Example: do not by "Profession Products" anything! The author reccommends it, but don't make the mistake I made. Do not buy "Professional Products". The other brands he promotes may be great (like AFR), but do your own research.

If you're considering a 383, 408 or 434 build get your teeth in this first. This book really lays it out for stroking the small block and really, honestly there is no other way to go. Sorry you guys runnin 355's but once you've gone down the stroker road you never look back. Who wouldn't love to build a square small block chevy 4.030 X 4.000! A 408 in a G-body is just gona roast up the joint.This book is good because David really focuses on building within a budget and succeeding without unnecessary skimping or going broke.David and his crew show all the tricks to making solid torque and horsepower. I was pleased you will be too!

I liked this book quite a bit. Many of David's insights corresponded with my own experience building engines. He talks about camshaft selection in all three of the books I bought that he authored, and I found his take on this very interesting. I am anxious to apply what I have learned about cams from him. The book would have been better if David spent more time talking about some of the details rather than how the industry has failed to recognize his talent. This goes for his other books as well. He really kind of just brushed over intake manifolds. I would have hoped for more information about sizing the intake to the performance of the heads and cam selection. He clearly is passionate about heads and head porting, but then just glosses over manifolds. Don't get me wrong. This is a good book and if you are still old school like me about the Small Block Chevy, then you need to read this book to get more up to date. Nice job on the cam selection tables, valve train geometry, cranks, rods, and pistons.

I haven't made it all the way through the book, but so far it is pretty good. The writing style works for me. It is interesting and even funny at times (I have a dry sense of humor). It starts from the ground up explaining key concepts and principles that affect engine performance. I would give it 5 stars except that I am disappointed the book is completely focused on 350s. It should be titled "Performance 350s on a Budget). I have a 327 and was looking for a good resource but this book only applies to my engine conceptually. Any of the specifics given for part combinations and the custom builds in the final chapter do not apply to me.

This is the most informing book on small blocks I have yet to see.the information is extremely useful and educational to those wanting to build a small block.As one review stated don't just skim through it,take the time to actually read the information and it will proove to be worth you're time.I would definitely recommend this book to anyone that's interested in building a small block.

This book really delivers what it promises; you don't have to even be a master machinist; you can simply use this information to guide your build/rebuild for your budget/needs, whether it a stout drivable high torque truck engine or a strip/track racer or a street drivable daily user for weekend campaigning. On the higher end one can obtain NASCAR-developed cylinder head castings for under $300 in 2008 pricing along with suitable rotating assembly and induction/ exhaust yields bang/$ performance.

Shopping list of components...lots of depictions of results of high end testing...not much for the average person or budget. Not really a "How to" in my opinion...more of a here is what you can buy and pay someone to do...unless you have access to high end testing equipment etc

This book truly does make me slap my head and say "I wish I was young"...because these steps are clear, concise and make tons of sense. I recommend anybody read this book and apply what works for them. I saved $30 a month in bank fees after reading the book...so well worth it. He's funny too which helps a dry topic like finances.

This is my new #1 recommendation for anyone seeking personal finance advice.This is definitely the best personal finance book I've read so far. It's a logical, step-by-step, practical handbook for financial success, specially written for people in their 20's. Sethi gives advice on “automatically enabling yourself to save, invest, and spend - enjoying it, not feeling guilty...because you’re spending only what you have.” His main point: automate your finances so you effortlessly save and invest, leaving you money to spend on things you love without feeling guilty. Automatic saving and investing helps overcome psychological barriers and laziness.In addition to his emphasis on automation, I agreed with Sethi’s recommendation for long-term, passive, buy-and-hold investing instead of speculative, market-timing investing. I also liked Sethi’s 85 Percent Solution, which states that it's better to act and get it 85% right than to do 0%; sometimes good enough is good enough, and it’s always better than doing nothing.Another good message is "spend extravagantly on the things you love, and cut costs mercilessly on the things you don't." That's valuable because everyone defines being "rich" differently, and it's not all about money. Money is just the tool we use to acquire the material possessions and experiences we want. That's the difference between being cheap and being frugal; being cheap is trying to cut spending on everything, and being frugal is cutting costs on the things you don't care about so that you can splurge on the things you do.I liked the concept of making a Conscious Spending Plan instead of a budget. Almost no one actually makes a budget, and even fewer follow it. Instead, consciously decide how you'll spend your money. I especially like this idea of guilt-free spending, because too often the recommendation is to limit all spending. But people in their 20s want to live it up, not sit at home and pinch every penny! The Conscious Spending Plan lets you spend a certain percentage of your money on whatever you want, without feeling guilty, since you’re paying yourself and your bills first.The book is written in the form of a 6-week action plan. Each chapter describes the tasks and reasoning behind them, and ends with a checklist of steps to take. Here are the weeks:Week 1: Credit Cards. The problem a huge portion of the population has is doing nothing with your savings for fear of "not doing it right." I cant tell you how many 35 year olds have $50k sitting in a savings account because they have this fear issue. If they had just taken some simple steps at age 25 instead of age 35 they'd have $70k instead of $50k. It is very simple to get started "doing it right" and this book will teach you how, and also why its the right thing. This book teaches you the very simple steps and the most simple investing strategies. I have been using them for years and I have literally never paid them a single penny in fees for making trades or anything else. They have the best array of no fee ETFs.
